2011 Velocity Prep Wrap-Up
This summer, Skillpoint hosted three Velocity Prep programs with three different school districts and helped set a new STEM career trajectory for 60 high school students.

GREENTech Velocity Prep asked a team of 20 students from Eastside Memorial Green Tech High School (AISD) to form a company focused on designing a "MicroGrid System for the Texas Colonias" for their client, the Texas Engineering Experiment Station (TEES). Working full-time for a month, three student companies "Delta Solar," "Helping Hands," and "Sol Stealers" worked with Sol Design Lab, Heliovolt, Austin Energy, Maverick Solar, Valence Battery to formulate an energy solution for 15 homes along the Texas-Mexico border. ROBOTech Velocity Prep asked a team of 20 students from Del Valle High School (DVISD) to form a company focused on designing a “Search-and-Rescue Robot” in the event of a natural disaster. for their client, the UT Department of Mechanical Engineering. Two student companies "Bureau of Technology, Inc. (BOT)” and “Robo Search and Rescue, Inc. (RSAR)” worked with National Instruments, UT’s Cockrell School of Engineering, and Travis County Emergency Services to develop robots capable of navigating rubble and identifying potential survivors in an emergency. Game On! Velocity Prep asked a team of 20 students from Connally High School (PISD) to form a company focused on designing an online video game to inform the public about AMD’s environmentally friendly energy efficient facility and campus. Game On! Provided an opportunity for students to design and develop video games in which they were responsible for every aspect of the games, including programming, artwork and design. Students worked side-by-side with industry professionals at Birch Tree Group, Tech Ranch Austin and Game Salad. The five teams were recently featured in Community Impact Newspaper.
