About Us

Skillpoint Alliance is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization that builds partnerships among industry, education and the community, leading to college and career success for Central Texans, while meeting employers’ needs for a qualified workforce.

Working as an intermediary, a facilitator and a spark of inspiration, we help the community “close the gap” and improve college and career success for youth and adults. Our goal is to encourage life-long learning, improve career opportunities and build self-sufficiency—while strengthening Central Texas as a region that attracts and retains good jobs.

History

Skillpoint Alliance was originally founded as the Capital Area Training Foundation (CATF), which was created in 1994 to address what the founders saw as a gap between employers' needs and the workforce's skills.

As was true then, Austin continues to experience tremendous economic growth and the accompanying demand for highly-skilled workers.  While this growth has resulted in prosperity and financial security for many, under-educated and under-skilled Central Texans who do not have the high tech, science, math and communication skills required by today’s workforce are not able to gain successful entry to Austin’s growing and emerging industries.  At the same time, local employers require an adequately trained workforce to continue growing in this competitive economy.

Although our name has changed, Skillpoint Alliance is dedicated to fulfilling the original mission of CATF:

Our mission is to enable the creation of a quality workforce for the Capital area and the preparation of youth and adults for lifelong learning, citizenship, and career success.  We will accomplish this mission by brokering partnerships between industry and secondary and postsecondary educators.

Please help us meet the needs of our vibrant community. Find out how you can get involved.

Ronald Smith evacuated from Hurricane Katrina and arrived in Austin with only $40.  He came to Skillpoint Alliance where we helped him obtain skills in construction through our adult workforce program, Construction Gateway. He then found employment with Zachry Construction in Austin. “Hope was a main element and this program, Construction Gateway, enhanced it and gave me the opportunity to expand my skills,” Smith said. “The people of Austin have been very generous to me. Thanks, Skillpoint Alliance!"
